DeShaun Riddick born in Brooklyn, New York 1986. DeShaun took an interest in piano at an early age of 5 years old. It all started with his grandmother's place . Whenever his parents went to work or on vacation or even just visiting his grandmother, he and his siblings were dropped off there to stay . Being bored and not having anything to do besides play outside, he found himself often making instruments out of what was ever laying within his reach from bucket drums to ukulele from boxes or Chinese food cartons . One day while going through his normal hunt for musical instrument materials. DeShaun found a piano bench that was hidden by bags or clothing items on it . He climbed up and sat down and lifted the cover off a baby grand piano from 1975. Although out of tune this was the beginning of his musical journey. It was here where some of his most earliest musical talents were discovered for piano.
As the years went by DeShaun's father Carlton (Who played Bass in the New York Philharmonics ) began to hear how he had a niche for hearing and emulating some of his favorite jazz tunes. Often they were heard on the radio station CD101.9 or songs that DeShaun committed to memory whenever he and his father went to the WTC on Wednesdays where there was weekly jazz performers. His father bought him a Casio keyboard for Christmas that was able to record 2 tracks . Just ten years old now, DeShaun was playing some of his own favorite songs that he loved. Only able to emulate the melodies in the right hand some of his favorite artist included the likes of Spyro Gyra , Euge Groove, Keiko Matsui, Fourplay, Sade ,George Benson, Debarge, Joshua -Redman, Jazzmatazz and many more ..
Composing came easy as if it was second nature. Inspiration wasdrawn from emotions of the day or just going back to that old out of tune baby grand . DeShaun began making tape cassettes for his mother and father to listen to. Often his father would say "Son you got great ideas keep up the good work but go to school." On his 16th birthday his father bought him a Benjamin Adams grand piano from Sam Ash. On the way home DeShaun popped in one of his favorite Jazzmatazz tunes "Feel The Music". By his senior year of high school DeShaun competed in the yearly Talent show for the first time ever. Although he did not win he was happy to lose to his sister who is a ballerina that took 1st place...
